We grew up watching Dumbo and reading about the endless adventures of Babar, so naturally elephants have a special place in our hearts. And today is a day to celebrate them. World Elephant Day, which launched in 2012 with the help of filmmaker Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, is meant to celebrate these creatures, raise awareness about their threatened species status, and encourage action to protect them.
For the first World Elephant Day, Patricia created Return to the Forest, a documentary that shares the story of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and their efforts to return captive Asian elephants back to the wild in Thailand.
This year, brands are getting on board to support the cause. Sasa Designs, a brand that employs deaf artisans in Kenya, has pledged $1 from every Kenya Elephant Wrap purchase to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust until August 13th. Wildlife Works developed Rukinga Wildlife Sanctuary in 1998 to protect local ecosystems in Kenya, and has continued to support this project, which includes the protection of elephants, there since. Other brands simply share their love of elephants through their conscious products. Learn more about our favorites below.
