Who Made your Shoes? The Story of Bourgeois Boheme

Guest post by: Bourgeois Boheme

What is the true value of shoes, we think this is a good question?  Is it simply the price tag or are there other considerations that need to come into play?  Some say Bourgeois Boheme's are a little expensive, but at BB it is important for us to place attention to how and where are shoes are made and this does come at a cost.  We highlight a few ways BB works to bring you our ethical sustainable collections and look forward to your feedback on this.

Our shoes are produced ethically in Portugal.

This means people who make our shoes are being paid fair wages, have good working conditions and they receive other benefits. This is sadly not a very common practice in the fashion industry. In order to get a low price most of the products are being made in Asian countries with not many regulations leaving people often working in horrible conditions. The payment they receive for their hard work barely covers their basic needs. What is even more heartbreaking is that many people even lose their lives during the production of the garments. One of the more known incidents is the collapsing of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh. 1,133 people died and another 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. There were five garment factories in Rana Plaza all manufacturing clothing for the western market. (1).

BB team loves fashion, however, we are 100% against sweatshops, which are needed in order to maintain cheap and fast fashion. We believe in better fashion. Ethical is the new black!

BB shoes are handcrafted and have unique designs.

Each style is designed exclusively for us, which means that you won’t find it anywhere else. Skilled artisans hand-make each pair of shoes using traditional techniques. You can read more about the production line in the How BBs Are Made section.

Created to last. Sustainable production and materials.

BB shoes are made of animal and eco friendly materials. There is absolutely no PVC either. Instead, we choose high-quality, Italian-made cotton-backed microfiber PU (polyurethane), textiles and natural materials. The result are sophisticated, innovative materials that are long-lasting, super-comfortable and waterproof. Our shoes are created to last. This is very important to the BB team as there are 14.3 million tons of textile thrown away each year in the USA alone and we do not want to contribute to this highly toxic number(2).

We did not just want to be another shoe brand but one that made a difference in every sense of style and compassion towards animals, people and the environment. We want to show that vegan shoes can be desirable from both an ethical and fashion sense. We believe this is the true value of the BB products which extends beyond just the price tag.
