Watch: Humanity's Global Footprint 40 Years Later

We constantly see how our actions affect the microcosm that is our day to day environment. We see trash on the streets. We see smog and pollution. We hear on the news that glaciers are melting and trees are being cut down to make way for new infrastructure. But what's the bigger picture?

NASA's jarring satellite footage, taken over the last forty years, gives us a wider understanding of the extent to which humans are scarring the face of Mother Earth. Vox put together a compilation of this footage that shows Brazil being deforested, the deserts of Las Vegas becoming densely populated, the Aral Sea drying up, and much, much more.

Watch the footage below and check out the EPA's suggestions about what you can do to reduce your impact on the earth.
