News To Celebrate for 2016: The Ban on Microbeads

On Monday, December 28, 2015, the President Obama signed a bipartisan bill:

H.R. 1321, the “Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015,” which prohibits the manufacture and introduction into interstate commerce of rinse-off cosmetics containing intentionally-added plastic microbeads.

That means that:

  • Exfoliating products like toothpastes and scrubs, starting in 2017 will have no plastic microbeads
  • These nasty small particles of plastic less than 5 millimeters, that can’t even be filtered with a Brita filter, won’t make themselves into fish and wildlife, and our food supply.
  • We’ll stop the more than 8 trillion of these microbeads that make their way into our waterways daily.  That’s enough surface area to coat 300 tennis courts daily!
  • Our fish and wildlife will be healthier, and we will too.
