Eight. Emma Watson revealed that she only has around eight pairs of shoes in a interview with Vogue UK to promote her movie The Bling Ring. To put it in perspective, the average woman owns on average twenty pairs of shoes but only wears five regularly. In response to our constant need for new things, Emma says, "It's almost like consumerism is a form of kleptomania. I've got about eight pairs of shoes and that's it. But it's easy for me to sound like a total hypocrite because, of course, I'm dressed in designer clothes right now."
This is why we love Emma. She keeps it real. Despite the fact that designer fashion houses are her personal Rent the Runway for red carpet events, she's still conscious of where her clothing comes from and how much stuff she actually needs. As a former celeb designer for People Tree, Emma traveled to Bangladesh and saw the impact of organic cotton farming and fair trade fashion production first hand:
"Fair Trade fashion comes from the villages – and provides a real alternative to working in a garment factory and the harsh environment of living in a slum. Fair Trade fashion is often completely handmade – and made of 100% natural and organic cotton – and it’s a small miracle that we as consumers can participate in a process that is keeping skills and communities alive and helping them to prosper."
Clearly, she has blossomed from young, curly haired Hermione into an inspiring and successful advocate for conscious fashion and feminism. Listen to her personal experience about fair trade fashion below.
