As the long, long winter is finally coming to a close, we're taking every opportunity we can to get outside and soak up the sun, and what better way to do that than by a fun outdoor workout (or a nice walk to a workout studio). No gym membership, no problem. We've put together a list of our favorite free or donation-based workouts around the city that will shake up your fitness routine, in a good way!
Yoga to the People (suggested donation $10)
For all you yogis, or aspiring yogis, YTTP is probably one of the best-known and most loved studios in the city. Their Vinyasa Flow classes are offered in studios throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. No matter what level you're at, YTTP will make you feel welcome with their 'give what you can, take what you need' motto.
XOS Hosh Yoga (suggested donation $10)
For all the North Brooklynites, XOS is also a donation-based studio that offers classes and meditation sessions that go beyond YTTP's Vinyasa Flow yoga - though they do have a fair number of flow classes. If you want to try something different and work to be more conscious about your body-mind connection, try a class like 'Conscious Flow' or 'Sweat to Meditate.'
Brick FlashWOD (free)
If you want to turn up the heat and try something CrossFit-inspired, Chelsea's Brick New York offers a series of outdoor workouts that combine cardio and weight training. With workouts throughout the day, you can go before work, after work, or even on your lunch break if you're really ambitious.
Barre3 at Bryant Park (free)
Find your inner ballerina and start your week off right with a barre class in Bryant Park. Put on by the West Village barre studio and Athleta every Monday morning at 7:30 AM, all you have to bring is yourself and a bottle of water. The rest is provided!
The Rise NYC (free)
The Rise encourages 'free outdoor fitness in the concrete jungle.' Every day is a new theme and a new location, so at least one day a week you'll be able to find something in your borough. Like the title implies, these workouts encourage your to rise bright and early - they began at 6:30 AM everyday - but they're definitely worth it.
Shape Up NYC (free)
Little known, but much appreciated, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation runs a program that offers free fitness classes in many locations throughout the five boroughs. Choose the location closest to you, and see what they have to offer. (Added bonus: Rec center memberships, which include access to work out equipment and a pool at some locations, are $25/year if you're 25 and under and $150/year if you're over 25).
